History
The 2300 Club of Church HillThe 2300 Club began in 1964 as a community gathering place catering to the new residents of "Old Church Hill," Richmond, Virginia's oldest neighborhood and one of the only intact 19th-century neighborhoods in the country. The Club was originally housed at the corner of 23rd and East Broad Streets, but moved in 1973 to its present location at 23rd and East Grace Streets.
In 1964, the future of Richmond's past was the primary concern of the 2300 Club founders. Their purpose was to restore the customs of gracious entertaining in an atmosphere recalling the private clubs that once provided a setting for the social history of Richmond. That concern and that purpose are still priorities for the 2300 Club today. One block east stands historic St. John's Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" address. St. John's dates to 1741, and it has been declared a national historic landmark. The area is filled with other buildings of historical significance. Behind St. John's Church is a stunning Greek revival home once owned by Elmira Shelton, childhood sweetheart of the poet and author Edgar Allan Poe.
On October 21, 2007, the Club celebrated its forty-third anniversary, remaining Church Hill's oldest private club. The Club provides its members and their guests with an elegant and unique ambiance - from fireplace-lit Victorian parlors to the English pub-style bar. The Club provides an authentic 19th-century atmosphere while enjoying the finest of 21st-century amenities. A beautifully landscaped boxwood garden sets the mood for afternoon tea, wedding ceremonies, and receptions. In addition to regular gourmet luncheons, dinners, and Sunday brunches, all expertly prepared, the Club also hosts private business and social functions. Weddings, anniversaries, political gatherings and professional meetings can be arranged through Emily Righter, the Club's general manager.
For your pleasure and convenience, the 2300 Club maintains reciprocal privileges with many other clubs throughout the United States and United Kingdom. Perhaps most importantly, members of the 2300 Club have the opportunity to join other Virginians in protecting and enjoying Richmond's heritage while preserving its architecture, customs, and cuisine. Our raison d'être - the joy and challenge of discovering there is a future for the past!
